Winter Damage Repair

Heavy rains on Jan. 10-11 caused some severe damage to portions of the Kinzua Valley Trail.

Approximately three inches of rain combined with runoff from a large amount of melting snow, washed out a few sections of trail.

Volunteers got together for a clean-up over the weekend, using heavy equipment and manpower to repair the damage caused by the weather. They dug ditches, installed embankment, removed logs, cleaned sluices and graded material in preparation for the upcoming 38th annual Tony Dolan Memorial Ski for Cancer event.

Kinzua Valley Trail Club President Don Cummins said that as soon as weather permits this spring, crews will proceed with a more substantial fix to those areas that are most susceptible to flooding and damage.

To that end, the Kinzua Valley Trail Club is organizing a campaign to reach out to the community, club members, corporations, business leaders and outdoor enthusiasts to pitch in and get the trail in tip-top shape for the year.

From Club President Don Cummins:

Looking back on 2016, it was quite an exciting year.  Our trail extension to Red Bridge was completed, a major portion of our trail was resurfaced, and an aggressive maintenance schedule helped put the trail in top shape.

2017 looks to be a very busy year for us as we continue our journey east to U.S. Route 219 and on to the Kinzua Bridge.
